Every car or truck has to have a rear view mirror in order to be legal to drive on the highway. This is one of the more useful things in a vehicle, though many don’t give it much thought. The moment that it becomes loose, or if it becomes cracked, it needs to be adjusted or it needs to be replaced. If these don’t work well, there can be huge problems while driving, and it might not be apparent until it is not working right. Not only must the mirror work and be clear, but the additions to it must be good as well. There is a  tab that turns it down in the event someone’s headlights are in your eyes, and this is an essential function.

The rear view mirror in the middle of the windshield is probably something that is used more than a person realizes. We glance into it all of the time, and most of the time we do it without thinking about it. This comes with driving experience. It seems that what is in front of us is more important than what is going on behind us on the road. We soon find that this is not necessarily true. When merging into any different lane, the rearviewmirror must be consulted.

One thing that I had a problem with, at least according to my husband, was using the rear view mirror when traffic suddenly slowed for any reason. There may be traffic backed up in many places for a variety of reasons, and one of the biggest is a construction zone on the highway. When you have to slow down you do so, but some don’t think about the people behind them. I learned that I have to look into the rearviewmirror to be sure that everyone else was slowing down as well. Many are distracted and this is a time when some accidents can happen.

I’m not really sure that looking into the rear view mirror will help in this case, especially if there is no where to go if it appears that someone is not paying attention and might hit you. If you have somewhere to go, that is a different story. It’s a scary thought, but a lot of accidents can be avoided simply by looking into the rear view mirror to see what everyone else is doing. Just don’t stare into it for so long that you miss what is going on in front of you.
